Can I own one here

Owning one in Montgomery County.

On your own land, yes

Owning a kei truck and working it on a ranch, a farm, a mine or private property does not depend on a road title. Some states still ask for a title or an off road registration.

A 25 year truck on the road

Road use with limits. A micro utility truck may drive Kansas public roads that are not interstate, federal or state highways. City streets open only where the city allows it.

A newer governed truck

Off highway vehicle. Nonhighway certificate of title. The micro utility truck definition asks whether the truck could exceed 40 mph as originally manufactured, so on its face it reaches a governed truck as well as an old one.

Roads open. State law opens the county and township roads of Montgomery County outside its cities to a UTV of the work-site class and to a micro utility truck, which is the class a kei truck falls in, and keeps them off every interstate, federal and state highway. Independence issues a micro utility truck application with a police inspection, so micro utility trucks reach its streets, and the ordinance text was not read.

This rests on Kansas law. No Montgomery County ordinance or resolution was read.

In town Some

  • To confirm Coffeyville. The city's own code was not read. Kansas keeps its streets closed to all-terrain vehicles, work-site utility vehicles and micro utility trucks unless the city authorizes them, K.S.A. 8-15,100(a)(2), 8-15,106(a)(2) and 8-15,109(a)(2).
  • Some Independence. The city issues a micro utility truck application that asks for liability insurance and a police inspection, which shows micro utility trucks are allowed on city streets once inspected. The ordinance text was not read, and a September 2025 ordinance (4493) lets first responders use all-terrain and work-site vehicles and keeps state and federal highways closed except to cross. Ordinance 4024 as cited on the city application form; Ordinance 4493, September 2025, per the city search listing, read 28 October 2026

How to import a mini truck, step by step.

A newer off road truck never lands in California. It comes in through Tacoma or by way of Houston.

Trucks travel in containers, one to a 20 foot box with room for parts or three to a 40 foot box.

Road miles are an estimate, the straight line times 1.2.

Importing a kei truck

The essentials, in short.

A truck under 25 can come in only as governed off road equipment, and only if its engine family held an EPA nonroad certificate for that model year. No kei engine family was certified for mini trucks before model year 2010, so a truck built after 31 October 2001 and before model year 2010 has no federal door until its 25th birthday.
