A semi cab layout on its own platform, separate from the truck's, designed by Giugiaro. A crash safety body and Japan's first steering that pulls away in a collision. TOPAZ engines and one of the longest wheelbases in its class, 2,420 mm. Representative van 3,395 by 1,475 by 1,855 mm, 12 valve DOHC 48 PS net at 5,900 rpm.
December 1999Variant addedHijet Cargo CNG with a new engine and larger gas cylinders, released 13 December 1999.
February 2000Partial improvement and variant addedA Delivery Raku Raku Pack with the DOHC DVVT EFI, reinforced front doors for parcel delivery and keyless entry.

A passenger seat back that folds forward for a 2,530 mm long load space (except Special), coloured bumpers and grab handles on every van, a driver airbag, AM/FM, keyless entry and wheel caps on the Extra, passenger seat slide and recline, intermittent wipers and fuel lid opener on the Deluxe, rear wiper and back door power lock on the Special.

Floor and front seat shapes changed for easier entry, passenger seat slide and recline on the Special, a 1,860 mm cargo floor, clutch start on MT, a more efficient torque converter on AT, the exterior noise rules met and a tilt steering option. A new Cruise grade with power windows, carpets and armrests.

January 2002Partial improvementEF-SE raised to 33 kW (45 PS), EF-VE to 37 kW (MT) and 39 kW (AT), the EF-DET turbo's torque to 103 N m.
Released 15 January 2002. EF-SE raised to 33 kW (45 PS), EF-VE to 37 kW (MT) and 39 kW (AT), the EF-DET turbo's torque to 103 N m. A Deluxe Turbo grade. Chrome grille and a passenger type split rear seat on the Cruise. Power steering on every van, keyless entry on every van except the Special, revised suspension. A 4AT on some grades, which improved the 4WD's economy. EF-VE and EF-DET vans rated 優-低排出ガス.

Body notes
- The Atrai commercial van of this generation is not an S200V. Daihatsu's own price tables give it GD-S220V (2WD) and GD-S230V (4WD). The passenger Atrai Wagon is GF-S220G and GF-S230G.
- The January 2001 minor change is the visual split: new bumpers, grille and rear lamps.
- Transmissions over the life: 5MT and column shift 3AT, a 4AT on some grades from January 2002.
- The Hijet Gran Cargo of July 2001 is a 1,300 cc registered car, not a kei van.
- Rolling into the 25 year lane: every unit built on or before 28 October 2001 is 25 today.

Named twice for mini trucks, model years 2010 to 2015. Two more 659 cc three cylinder families run to 2026 unnamed, and 659 cc fits only the EF.
A truck under 25 can come in only as governed off road equipment, and only if its engine family held an EPA nonroad certificate for that model year. No kei engine family was certified for mini trucks before model year 2010, so a truck built after 31 October 2001 and before model year 2010 has no federal door until its 25th birthday.
