Can I own one here

Owning one in Somerset County.

On your own land

A kei truck in Maine is an off-road vehicle that cannot be registered or titled, and it works on land its owner owns or leases or on another's land with permission, never on a public way.

On the farm

No farm rule puts a kei truck on a Maine road. The special registration permit of 29-A 501(8), which lets an ATV travel a road for farm purposes between farm lots, is a Title 29-A registration that 354 forbids for an off-road vehicle.

A 25 year truck on the road

Closed to road use. Maine classes a mini truck as an off-road vehicle, and an off-road vehicle cannot be registered or used on a public way.

A newer governed truck

Private land only. None. Off-road vehicles are exempt from Maine title under 29-A MRSA 652(17).

State rules

Roads and towns

Roads and towns in Somerset County.

Towns only. Skowhegan opens eight short town road routes to ATVs from May to December, but its own ordinance leaves trucks out and a kei truck is not an ATV in Maine, so it works private land and stays off every public way.

In town Some

  • Some Skowhegan. Russell Road from the north side of the fairgrounds to Bennett Avenue, Bennett Avenue to Pleasant Street, Pleasant Street west to Norridgewock Avenue and east to Madison Avenue, High Street from Madison Avenue to the municipal lot, Norridgewock Avenue west to the Norridgewock line, Burrill Hill Road from the Norridgewock line to Bigelow Hill Road and Bigelow Hill Road back to the Norridgewock line. Sixteen state roads, Routes 2, 104, 150 and 201 among them, also need MaineDOT approval. The ordinance's own ATV definition leaves out any truck as 29-A 101(88) defines it. A further amendment of June 2026 was reported and not read. Traffic Ordinance, Appendix 1, approved by the selectmen 13 June 2023, read 28 October 2026
  • To confirm The Forks. On 16 September 2025 the plantation's assessors voted 2 to 1 on an article to make its sections of Lake Moxie Road an ATV access route for the 2026 season as a trial, a referendum to follow. Whether the article carried was not read. Board of Assessors minutes, 16 September 2025, read 28 October 2026

County roads To confirm

The commissioners voted 3 to 2 in February 2026 against a club's request to open 2.2 miles of Lake Moxie Road in the unorganized territory, as reported. No list of county designations was found. Commissioners' vote, as reported, read 28 October 2026

State highways To confirm

  • Skowhegan's list of state roads that need MaineDOT approval for ATV access as well as the board's, among them Water Street and West Front Street on Route 2, Madison Avenue and Waterville Road on Route 201, North Avenue on Route 150 and Main Street, Middle Road and Fairview Avenue on Route 104. MaineDOT's approvals were not found. Skowhegan Traffic Ordinance, Appendix 1, 13 June 2023, read 28 October 2026

How to import a mini truck, step by step.

Trucks travel in containers, one to a 20 foot box with room for parts or three to a 40 foot box.

Road miles are an estimate, the straight line times 1.2.

Importing a kei truck

The essentials, in short.

A truck under 25 can come in only as governed off road equipment, and only if its engine family held an EPA nonroad certificate for that model year. No kei engine family was certified for mini trucks before model year 2010, so a truck built after 31 October 2001 and before model year 2010 has no federal door until its 25th birthday.
