Can I own one here

Owning one in Fremont County.

On your own land, yes

Owning a kei truck and working it on a ranch, a farm, a mine or private property does not depend on a road title. Some states still ask for a title or an off road registration.

A 25 year truck on the road

Road use opens later. Colorado made kei vehicles a legal road class in 2025 and title and registration open on 1 January 2028.

A newer governed truck

Off highway vehicle. From 1 January 2028 Colorado names it a kei off-road vehicle, an off-highway vehicle under the Certificate of Title Act, titled at the county motor vehicle office.

Roads and towns

Roads and towns in Fremont County.

Some routes. Cañon City and Florence open their streets to UTVs and OHVs by permit, and Fremont County has opened County Road 53 and perhaps 54.

In town Some

  • To confirm Brookside. No code published online was found, so the town's own code was not read.
  • Open Cañon City. Private non-commercial UTVs with a city permit may run on all public roads in the city except the CDOT roads, US 50, Fremont Drive, SH 115 and Rainbow Drive, which may be crossed only at ninety degrees after a full stop. Cañon City Code Chapter 10.10, Ordinance No. 4-2022 of 6 June 2022, amended by Ordinance No. 18-2023 of 18 December 2023, read 28 October 2026
  • Closed Coal Creek. The code was searched for off-highway, OHV, all-terrain, UTV, side-by-side and utility terrain. It opens no street to OHVs. Coal Creek Code of Ordinances, republication online 17 July 2025, read 28 October 2026
  • Open Florence. OHVs may run on all public roads in the city except the state highway system. They may cross a highway where safe to reach gas stations, grocery stores and restaurants. The city's rules also name limited use of SH 115 from Teller Street to east of Gumaer Street and of SH 67 from Arrowhead Street to 7th Street. No CDOT act opening those stretches was found, and a city cannot name a state highway as a route under C.R.S. 33-14.5-108(1)(f), so treat them as crossings. Florence Code Chapter 10.18, Ordinance No. 08-19-2019A of 3 September 2019 and Ordinance No. 09-20-2021B of 1 November 2021, read 28 October 2026
  • To confirm Rockvale. No code published online was found, so the town's own code was not read. Municode lists Rockvale but its code page does not open.
  • To confirm Williamsburg. No code published online was found, so the town's own code was not read.

County roads Some

All of County Road 53, which the county does not maintain, under Resolution 29 of 2021. The same resolution opened 0.7 mile of County Road 45 from County Road 53 to a parking area, and a 2023 draft resolution revokes that stretch. A 2023 draft resolution, heard 12 September 2023, opens County Road 54, also unmaintained. Each says no other county road is open unless the board names it. Fremont County Resolution 29, Series of 2021, adopted 27 July 2021; 2023 draft resolutions on County Roads 45 and 54, read 28 October 2026

The nearest ports with a sailing from Japan on record

  • The Port of Tacoma, The Northwest Seaport Alliance South Harbor, about 1,300 road miles.

How to import a mini truck, step by step.

A newer off road truck never lands in California. It comes in through Tacoma or by way of Houston.

Trucks travel in containers, one to a 20 foot box with room for parts or three to a 40 foot box.

Road miles are an estimate, the straight line times 1.2.

Importing a kei truck

The essentials, in short.

A truck under 25 can come in only as governed off road equipment, and only if its engine family held an EPA nonroad certificate for that model year. No kei engine family was certified for mini trucks before model year 2010, so a truck built after 31 October 2001 and before model year 2010 has no federal door until its 25th birthday.
